Howdy Internet,
I’ve always loved Limericks. Short and rhythmic, light-hearted and pungent. The Limerick is inherently approachable. Not meant to be too-heady or insightful, just the fun play of language and a quick laugh.
Poetry, for me, is often the opposite of this - often burdened by my ever-present need to explore the mystery of existing. To try and make pretty the unknowable.
To combat this, I’ve been casually writing Limericks about dumpster diving for the last year or so. When the task of poetry is too much to take on, I turn to the soft restraints of rhyme schemes and syllable counts.
Below are a few of my favorite dumpster limericks, so far.
Hope y’all enjoy!
We dig in the trash for our jobs to take out what others have lobbed We don’t pay a penny but load up on plenty So it looks like the dumpster got robbed
The Dollar Store keeps making crap that shatters before its unpacked so into the dump goes boxes of junk That never gets used or unwrapped
We’re a minute too late, aww shucks! We just can’t keep up with the trucks with each dumpster we find we’re a dumpster behind We never have this much bad luck!
There once was a magical bin that sorted what all you tossed in It ate up the trash Recycled the glass And spit out what shouldn’t have been
The landfills are all filling up The cities abandon the dump Plastic’s a sham and Recycling a scam But luckily we keep making stuff!
There’s a bandaid and somebody’s hair kitty litter and flies everywhere Push it all to the side Down there trying to hide Is a new in the box Air Fry-air
Behold a new low for the race A monolith built of disgrace It’s not the Great Wall or an American mall But a mountain of clothes seen from space!
While shopping inside of the store there’s baskets we just can’t ignore Returns stacked in piles They’re emptying aisles We’ll come back tonight to explore
Thanks for reading y’all!
Hope you enjoyed my goofy little dumpster limericks - I’ve got a lot more, so someday there may be a goofy little book full of them.
Alex
Still laughing so hard that my kids came to see what was going on!
Awww. Keep them coming! A fun read!😂
